Google is going hard on AdWords clients with less-than-quality landing pages

Google is going hard on AdWords clients with less-than-quality landing pages for their websites, in an attempt to clean up those made-for-AdSense pages found all over the web.

Read more at Inside Adwords

As you may recall, we began incorporating advertiser landing page quality into the Quality Score back in December 2005. Following that change, advertisers who are not providing useful landing pages to our users will have lower Quality Scores that in turn result in higher minimum bid requirements for their keywords. We realize that some minimum bids may be too high to be cost-effective — indeed, these high minimum bids are our way of motivating advertisers to either improve their landing pages or to simply stop using AdWords for those pages, while still giving some control over which keywords to advertise on. Although it is counter-intuitive to some who hear it, we’d rather show one less ad than to show an ad which leads to a poor user experience — since long-term user trust in AdWords is of overarching importance.

From time-to-time, we improve our algorithms for evaluating landing page quality (often based on feedback from our end-users), and next week we’re launching another such improvement. Thus, over the coming days a small number of advertisers who are providing a low quality user experience on their landing pages will see increases in their minimum bids. It is important to note, however, that the vast majority of advertisers will not be affected at all by this change, as they link to quality landing pages.

If you do see an increase in minimum bids and you feel that your landing page is providing a great user experience, please contact AdWords support and we’ll take a look. Also, for useful guidelines which will help to define what users look for in a high quality site, we hope you’ll take a look at the landing page and site quality guidelines, from the AdWords Help Center.

Juan Pablo Montoya off to Nascar next season

Juan Pablo Montoya will join Chip Ganassi Racing for next year. It has been reported that it is Juan who asked Chip Ganassi Racing for the race seat and otherwise but it is imaterial. Most important of all, Juan got to confirm that he will race again next year, after several not so successful seasons at F1. Mc Laren has also confirmed that Juan will be released immediately and his remaining F1 races will be replaced by Mc Laren test driver Pedro de la Rosa.

To me, it is rather a good move by Juan. As a F1 driver , you want to continue to race without having to stop for a year or two. Getting a race seat these day is not easy. Good that Juan grap one quick when it is available.

With Juan leaving Mc Claren, it looks like Kimi seat with Mc Laren is secured. But then is there a point for Kimi to stay at Mc Laren ? It would be better off for Kimi to join better team like Renault where he may stand a chance to win a title. It has been a disappointing season for Mc Laren so far.

Discussion on MiCAT at the Cat and Kitten Forum

The show cat fee of RM 170.00 is definitely high but yet it attracted a lot of participation. No doubt that the show fee is very high compared to that of a dog show. As the whole show involve the invitation of 8 oversea judges and one of the way to cover the high cost is to charge high show cat fee.

First Malaysia Dog Olympic Day

The first Malaysia Dog Olympic Day was successfully held on June 18th, 2006 at Central Park, Bandar Utama. In the event, we have introducrd a great number of new Dog Challenge Competitions and organized the First Schutzjund Trial and First Dog Agility Trial in Malaysia.

Report from NST as below:-

Big crowd at Dog Olympics
NST, 19 June 2006

KUALA LUMPUR: A massive black German Shepherd looks up at his owner, waiting for his commands.

Dog handler and breeder Peter Kong says “go!” and Don races to an “attacker”, who has a stick in his hand, and grabs him by the sleeve.

Although Don looks as if he could easily rip the attacker’s arm off with his powerful jaws, the dog just holds on to the man’s sleeve, waiting for the next command.

Only a highly-trained dog with such discipline and skills can win in the newest dog sport to hit the country — the Schutzhund competition.

Literally translated from German, it means “protection dog”, but the sport revolves around the intimate bond between trainer and animal.

The Schutzhund competition made its debut in Malaysia yesterday at the inaugural Malaysia Dog Olympics Day at the Central Park, Bandar Utama.

The event, attended by over 1,000 dog lovers and pets of every size and breed, was organised by dog-lover portal puppy.com.my and sponsored by Purina Petcare (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.

Kong and Don won in the obedience category in the competition.

Phumphithak Phensrinuk, the Thai judge for the competition, said dogs of this calibre were very hard to train as they were physically and mentally strong.

An agility competition and other games for dogs and their owners were also held throughout the day.

The park was overrun with beagles, chihuahuas, golden retrievers and cocker spaniels, but some less common dogs such as the Siberian husky also made an appearance.

It was a day for canines indeed as many stalls had been set up around the park, selling various toys and treats for dogs.

It may have been the Dog Olympics, but World Cup fever was apparent even there as some of the smaller dogs sported custom-made football jerseys.

Pictures of the Malaysia Dog Olympic Day will be available soon.

Google Spreadsheets turns up heat on Excel

Google is moving one more step ahead to offer web based spreadsheet service. This is widely expected after Google acquired Writely that offer web based web processing facility. We should see a few years from now, many will subscribe to all these web based service that will run out of your browser and go without the need to continue to upgrade your word processing and spreadsheet software. Best of all, these online documents will be able to be shared among your co workers.

Google is set to launch on Tuesday a Web-based spreadsheet program that will allow people to view and simultaneously edit data while conducting “in-document” chat, a company product manager said Monday.

The launch of Google Spreadsheets puts the search engine in even more heated competition with Microsoft, whose desktop-based Excel spreadsheet program is a standard office tool.

Google, which acquired the Writely Web-based word processor in March, is unleashing Web-based services of programs that propelled Microsoft to dominance on the desktop. Microsoft is responding by revamping its business to focus on Web services under the Windows Live and Office Live monikers.

Google Spreadsheets, which will go live on Tuesday as part of Google Labs, supports the import and export of documents in the .xls format used in Excel and the .csv (comma-separated values) format, said Jonathan Rochelle, product manager for Google Spreadsheet.

The service provides automatic saving, so once a document is saved for the first time it is saved upon every change, as well as enables easy transfer of data from cell to cell, inserting and deleting of rows and columns and supports multiple sheets or tabs, he said.

Consumers must have a Google account to use the service.

Snow and flight delay

When we travelled to Hokkaido in early February, we touched down in Japan via Narita Airport and we saw a group of tourist protesting. We later came to know that Narita Airport was closed for two days due to heavy snowing and many missed their flight and were not able to leave Japan as everyone were fighting for the available seats to leave Tokyo after the airport reopen. The heavy snow caught Narita unprepared and the airport authority simply did not have sufficient equipment to clear the thich layer of snow from the aircraft fast enough.

On the day that we are leaving Hokkaido via Chitose Airport 新千歳空港, snow has apparently start very early in that morning and when we walk to the check in counter from airport hotel, we were immediately told that all flight were cancelled during to snow. We were told to come back at 10am to check and we head back to hotel to relax. By 11am, we were still at the hotel waiting for news but we had to check out and leave for the terminal again to wait. By that time, we know by then that we will miss our connecting flight to leave Japan via Narita at 2:00pm.

The wait turned out to be a long one. Many arrangement were made to leave Japan via other place such as Kansai International Airport (Osaka) but non of them materailize as snowing continue till later afternoon.

The airport was full with tourist and business traveller and tension run higher and higher as the delay continue. By late evening, a group of Hong Kong tourist started their protest at the airport while others continue to relax and wait. Knowing that there will not be sufficient seat available to all to leave Chitose, many had to leave the airport to look for accomodation else where and try their luck on the next day. We waited at the airport and finally managed to catch a late flight to Tokyo and check into airport hotel in Narita.

On reaching Narita next morning, we were not able to get a direct flight back to KLIA and had to grap the available seat to Singapore and still not sure if we are able to get any seat to fly from Changi to KLIA. We were lucky to find out in Singapore that some shuttle flight seat from Singapore to KLIA were available and we managed to fly back to KLIA on the same day. All in all, the trip from Hokkaido to home took almost two full days but those are the things that we had to face when we travelled to snow country 🙂

Send $$$: PayPal to offer paying by text message

Online payment company PayPal is preparing to offer a service that will let consumers make purchases or money transfers using simple text messaging via mobile phones, the company said on Wednesday.

The move by PayPal, a unit of online auctioneer eBay, marks a big step in bridging the worlds of e-commerce and the physical world of brick-and-mortar stores by giving consumers a pay-as-you-go option via phones, analysts said.

The service, known as PayPal Mobile, will be launched in the next couple of weeks in the United States, Canada and Britain. Other markets worldwide will follow for the world’s biggest online payments service.

“PayPal is going to be launching a mobile-payments product,” PayPal spokeswoman Sara Bettencourt told Reuters.

China’s Shocking Dog and Cat Fur Trade

Someone sent us a video obtained from the following URL and that video is one that I can only watch halfway and no further. Killing dogs and cat for fur trade in China is shocking and cruel. To stop the killing, all must refrain from buying and wearing fur.

“Man’s best friend” killed for fur? It’s not just a bad dream. PETA recently conducted an undercover investigation into the Chinese dog and cat fur trade to show you what the industry is so desperate to hide. Even our veteran investigators were horrified at what they found: Millions of dogs and cats in China are being bludgeoned, hanged, bled to death, and strangled with wire nooses so that their fur can be turned into trim and trinkets. This fur is often deliberately mislabeled as fur from other species and is exported to countries throughout the world to be sold to unsuspecting customers in retail stores. China supplies more than half of the finished fur garments imported for sale in the United States, so the bottom line is that because dog and cat fur is so often mislabeled, if you’re buying fur, there’s no way to tell whose skin you’re wearing.
